Nail Art History
The Chinese are believed to be the first to use enamel on their fingers about 3000 years ago. After the substance dried they had a pink finish on their nails
It is believed that the Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, and the Inca civilization were some of the first to paint their nails. The Chinese used some type of enamel, the Indians used a dye from the Henna plant, and the Egyptians used nail art during their early civilization.
The Egyptians used different color nails to identify which class their were from. For example, the higher class wore a deep shade of red and lower classes used a pale shade on their nails. The Inca were the first to paint images such as an eagle on their fingers.
The nail designs began in the US in the early 19th century following the development of the orange wood sticks in Europe. The popularity spread and with the growing number of cars availability nail salons began to show up in towns.
With new nail polish colors and the “moon manicure” nail art gain a new life. The moon manicure was where the middle of the finger was painted while leaving the moon of the finger nail unpainted.
Around 1940 the Revson brothers created a new kind of enamel which led to the beginning of the Revlon company. The changed the industry by using pigments instead of dye in their colors which allowed new colors to be developed. As we all known Revlon become a leader in this business and nail art became an institution.
Since the 1940′s nail art has evolved into a more creative and artistic looking nail. Trends have included symbols, air brushing, piercing, beads, acrylic, and gel nails. It has become a real fashion statement and is an accessory.
